JB: Who are the Warsaw City Rockers? Where do they come from and what do they do?
Lux Torpedo: Warsaw City Rockers is a wild bunch of rock’n’roll lovin’ drunkards and losers from the deep shit place called Warsaw, Poland. Place where booze is cheap and love is dirty. Havin this trouble makin gang attitude, Ramones style, you know what I mean. Warsaw City Rockers are 4 djs: Lux Torpedo, Koz de Beat, Kari Devolei and Mr. Pimsley. We’re doing lot of mess, playing a lot of parties all around the city, from time to time we’re also trying to do some shows of bands that we like. Warsaw City Rockers is also kind of community, group of friends. Like this happy family from Ramones song. We got our own t-shirts, do graffiti on the streets, you know, we love this Locals Only thing. We love to mark the streets and people. WCR Kids por vida hombre! Hahaha stupid gringo wannabe gangstaz
JB: How would you describe the music scene in your city? Are people getting more and more into garage punk and rock and roll or do they just hate it?
Lux Torpedo: What can I say… Music scene in Warsaw fuckin sucks. Only independet scene in here is this tough guy macho hard core, which we’re not really into. Hip hop is huge, some bands are pretty good, but still it’s not our favourite fairy tale. I think it’s not necessary to mention about the plague called electronic music…
If it’s about garage punk then it’s just us, and few bands that more or less might fit into this genre. There is also this retro r’n’r/rockabilly scene, but fuck it, that’s crap. Don’t wanna be rude or anything but gotta admit that we are responsible for bringing all this music to the masses down here. Few years ago no one knew any of those things that we were playing. -Black Lips?! What the fuck is that? -Jay who? Reatard? Dunno this guy, any good? And now man, Bad Kids is like fuckin anthem to all those bloody shit faced hipsters! When we play it we have whole lot of ass shakin, table dancing and loud sing-a-longs! And Jay Reatard is a hero, like he should. Those are just examples, we’re pretty proud that we can educate people with good music! Make them listening to 13th Floor Elevator instead of MGMT haha
JB: A lot of people, they just want to start a band and play music...what made you say ""fuck that shit, i want to be a dj"?
Lux Torpedo: Believe me, we started more bands that you can even imagine. But dunno, it never worked out. We still play very often, but it’s only for fun, you know, drink beer, smoke weed and let’s play punk. Our latest projects were: Crystal Meth – it was supossed to be inspired by The Gories, and Brudno (means Filth in polish) – it was grim post black metal with elements of stoner haha that shit was crazy! Maybe one day we gonna start a real band, but till then, fuck that shit! I still wanna be a dj! We have lot of fun doing this, they pay us, we got free booze. And girls like us. It’s almost like playing in Stones man!
JB: Do you guys still have a lot of influence from the ex Soviet Union? How was the music scene back when you were part of the Soviet Union? Is it better now or was it better then?
Lux Torpedo: First of all Poland never been part of Soviet Union, we always were more or less independent country. We were just part of Communist Block.
It’s hard to answer that one, we all are to young to remember it well, Andy never experienced it on himself as he is born and raised in London, UK, and Karol is the youngest, when he was born communism was already gone… Probably now is better, you know, back then listening to American or british music was illegal, you could go to jail for this, you could be expelled from school for having long hair or Mohawk. But polish punk rock from the 70s was fuckin amazing. It’s just pure, raw, angry energy. Just check first things from Dezerter, Brygada Kryzys, Tilt, Kult or KSU. All those bands now sucks but back then they were amazing! By the way, talking about history and past is our polish, national sport. We gotta stop this and start thinking about now and tomorrow. If it aint gonna happen, we’ll forever live in mental medieval times.
JB: If you could make a gang of monsters...who would be in your gang? Which historical leader, artist or person (dead or alive) would your gang kill?
Lux Torpedo: Oh I like this one haha. We’d chose GG Allin, Lux Interior and Darby Crash. Who would we kill? Dunno, I think I’d start with Elvis Presley, just hate this asshole haha We’d kick his ass just right, to make sure that he’s finally dead. Fuck Elvis! We’re the Reatards!
JB: what would you choose..being a Nazi gay skinhead into gangbangs or beating up a 5 year old kid in pink panties in front of your grandmother? If you dont choose rock and roll stops forever
Lux Torpedo: I’d say, fuck rock n roll, let it bleed and die slowly and painfully, but on the other side I just can’t stand vision of world full of electronic crap music… so I’d rather beat the shit out of this little bitch, I hate kids in pink pants! Kill her!! Die, die my darling!!
JB: Right now what things does eastern europe have that are better than western europe?
Lux Torpedo: You’ve been here man, you still have to ask?! We’re proud of our vodka! We also got nice girls, but fuck it, all girls are nice as long they got big tits, innit? So vodka, what else… Oh I know, we got here in Poland, the biggest monument of Jesus Christ in the world!! Just fuckin awesome hahaha. We still ain’t got no euro, so it might be a little cheaper then in Germany. Cheap is good. And we do LOVE local food! Works great with heavy drinkin!
JB: Beside being DJs..you guys also promote music shows in Warsaw. What bands have played your shows in the last few years? What bands are on your wish list?
Lux Torpedo: Haven’t done many shows to be honest, the last one was Davila 666 and Acid Baby Jesus in November 2010. We made also few times street punk band from Berlin Radio Dead Ones, mod-garage from Sweden Kilroy, crazy synth punk from Philadelpia Low Budget. We also did more or less 15 shows of some polish punk bands, made a little tour in Germany with few of them as well.
Wish list is long and starts with The Black Lips. I’ve seen’em 3 time, everytime I had to travel a lot to check those dudes out, but I loved every single time I’ve seen em! And we’d love to have’em in Warsaw. For sure we’d love to have Davila back, doing Pierced Arrows would be awesome. As well as Kid Congo, Ty Segall or Thee OhSees, Hunx, NoBunny. We’d love to have them all here!! The question is if anyone but us would be interested with such shows down here haha. We try to educate those bastards, but they don’t wanna pay for the entrance to the gigs!! Crazy motherfuckers, I tell ya!
Soon we’re doing gig of two garage bands from France, The Strange Hands and Regal. Supported by local, our friends band Obligatory Niggers. We’re pretty excited bout this one, hope it’s gonna be a good show!
JB: Your top 5 music albums of all time?
Lux Torpedo: Oh fuck, I just can’t choose 5 of em. But ok, let’s try…
1. Gun Club - Miami
2. Murder City Devils – In name and blood
3. Johnny Thunders & The Heartbrakers – L.A.M.F.
4. X – Los Angeles
5. Dead Boys – Young, Loud and Snotty
those might be my favourite bands/artists. But it’s not fair. I love soooo many bands man…
Kari de Volei:
Dead Moon - Thirteen Off My Hook
Mudhoney - every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
the seeds-s/t
wipers - is this real
black Sabbath - master of reality
Koz de Beat:
Beat Happening – Black Candy
Spacemen 3 – Sound of confusion
13th floor elevators – Psych sounds of
The Fall – Live at witch trails
Gun Club – Fire of love
JB: Who wins a fight between a polar bear, Vladimir Putin and Andrew Golota? Why?
Lux Torpedo: Sad to say but probably motherfucker Putin… He’s an ex KGB agent, so he’s a well trained killing machine. You just can’t win KGB agent. But I’d keep my fingers crossed for polar bear. By the way, you know that polar bears don’t live in Poland?! Huh? Dunno why people from west thinks that such animals lives here!! It ain’t that cold here people! And we’re not that wild east!! And no one cares bout Golota any more, now we got Tomasz Adamek!! He soon gonna beat Kliczko and we finally gonna have heavywight champ!! POR FIN motherfuckers!!
JB: Last movie that made you cry?
Lux Torpedo: Haha not sure, Titanic, but don’t wanna talk about that shit haha. I always cry on Braveheart as well. I’m a little cry baby.
JB: Guns N'Roses or Motley Crue?
Lux Torpedo: Well, hate both, but Tommy Lee is such a pussy that I’d choose Axl and co. And I love their’s Spaghetti Incident . So welcome to the jungle!!
JB: What's the longest DJ set that the WCR had to play? How many hours, days, ect...and where and when? How was the experience?
Lux Torpedo: Just few days ago we were playing on the biggest festivals in Poland, Heineken Open’er in Gdynia, you know one of those big festivals, that have Pulp and Prince as headliners, and a lot of other popular crappy bands as stars… Someone from the organizator called us 2 days before asking Guys, you wanna play? We said yes. And we did. We played 4 days in a row, 10 hours per day. It was pretty tough, just like working in a factory. But as well it was exciting, during those 4 days 12.000 people seen and heared us playing, 12.000 were dancing to punk rock and garage music, we played them GG Allin and those suckers were dancing hahaha. It was pretty cool feeling to see those hundreds of pretty girls shaking their asses and singing Hey Ho! Let’s go! Probably we won’t do this again, but it was cool experience. They payed us shit, we haven’t seen any band, but still, we had fun when all those little girls where doing photos with us. First you think, what the fuck, I’m just a dj… but then…oh wait. I’m a DJ, I’m a rock star, yeah, let’s do it baby! Haha We were dancing a lot on our stage, doing 2 man mosh pit, doing lot of air guitar and singin loud, drinkin free beers. We had fun, and people had fun. We like fun.
JB: What would you do if you are playing a really important gig and in the middle of your set..you have the need to take a shit and there's no bathroom in the venue!?!
Lux Torpedo: Oh I totally know that feeling. On this big festival we had no toilet on our stage, we had to use those disgusting portable plastic toilets. I had few experiances with some nasty shit actions in there. You know, after few days of eating fast food junk just once a day, drinking crazy amounts of beer and smoking cigs your stomach is just a fuckin big mess… I was so desperate, I had to use those plastic shtiholes, first time in my live. I wanna throw up even now when I just think about it haha
JB: Any plans for The Warsaw City Rockers to play America?
Lux Torpedo: Sure man, we’d love to do this. We’d love to make a road trip from coast to coast, playing in the dive bars in all those cities passing throu. Visiting all those great places. You know, we’re pretty much grow on American pop culture, it feels so close to us, but yet so far away… I love the idea of making road movie with WCR haha. Lately I wrote an email to Eric from Goner records, asking him is there any chance that he’d like to book a bunch of djs from eastern Europe to play some after party at Goner Fest 2011. He wrote back, said yes. So we get fuckin overexcited!! You know!! WoooHoooo! We’re goin to Memphis! Yeah! High 5 motherfuckers! Roadtrip! WooHooo! Party! Fiesta! But then he never answered us with any details or anything… So we’re sad now. But if anyone wanna get us to play in America, whatever it is north, Canada or even central or south, no hay problemo, hablamos espanol! And we love to travel!! Let us play at your party!! You’ll have fun! C’mon ya’ll!
JB: What would you play in a show if you knew the world was gonna end in 20 minutes?
Lux Torpedo: Man. That’s hard one. Not sure. Ok. First I’d go with Dead Moon – It’s ok. Then something by Roky Erickson, he got this apocalyptic attitude, it might be Starry Eyes, fuckin lovely tune, let people hug and dance in couples for the last time, maybe someone will get laid as well. So, we still got some time, aight? So, it’s high time for some good ‘ol rock’n’roll. I’d choose X – Breathless. And the last one song would be The Doors – The End. I’d just push play button, and start drinkin. Fuck the world, let’s die. Just wanna die drunk and fast!
JB: What was the first album you bought and which was the last one?
Lux Torpedo: First was Aerosmith – Get a grip. But the first, real one, that started my journey through the world of music was Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill. The last one, man don’t remember. I spent last 6 months in jungle in Ecuador. And before that I just got black hole in my memory haha. But now I gotta buy new Black Lips LP. Arabia Mountain sounds pretty good!
JB: Final words to the world?
Lux Torpedo: We wanna drink your beer, we wanna bang your mama, girl or sister, we are rude and arrogant, loud and snotty. But we are nice boys though. So don’t be afraid, come to our party, and have fun. Or call us, we’re gonna come and play in your town. We’re like beatniks. We love to travel and play on our bongos!
