NBC: Hi Seth! Thanks for wasting some of your precious time answering our stupid questions. We realize some of our local reader may not be familiar with you, so please explain to these ignoranuses: Who are you? Where are you from? What bands are you in currently or have played in before? Who are the other members of Useless Eaters? Since when have you guys been playing under that name? What is your mission in this big, floating blue marble we call Earth?
Seth: My name is Seth Sutton. I was born on a military base in a beach town in Mississippi. I was raised in Germany, Virginia and Memphis. I'm 22 and currently live in Nashville. I have previously played with Heavy Cream, Feral Beat, Peach Kelli Pop, Vile Nation and the Jay Reatard band for a short stint.
I have been involved with Useless Eaters since 2008. It was initially my naïve attempt at a solo project, and I suppose it still is. The current line up for the live band consist of Chet Jameson (of New Pleasure) on bass and Casey Weissbuch (of Diaherra Planet) on drums. Our mission is to play as many places as we can until we finally explode.
NBC: Useless Eaters has been very prolific these last 3 or 4 years; you guys have put out a large amount of singles, LP’s and appeared con a few compilations. What’s on schedule for you guys recording-wise for the remaining months of 2012 and first half of 2013? Any new releases that we should be on the lookout for?
Seth: Useless Eaters has a new EP out on Manimal Vinyl called Black Night Ultraviolet. We will also have an LP out later this year on the same label.
NBC: A couple of years back (2009) I went to Gonerfest 6 in Memphis and had one of the best weekends of my entire adult life, until now. That weekend I saw you play twice: the first show I saw you play was with your band Vile Nation at this club called Nocturnal (with The Reatards and Becky Lee & Drunkfoot). Vile Nation blew me the fuck away; it was an old school hardcore punk band like you don’t usually see nowadays. What’s going on with Vile Nation these days? Are you guys broken up?
Seth: Vile Nation hasn't played a show since then, Chris, the vocalist, and I are the only core members. He still lives in Memphis so its hard to get together so who knows when we'll do something again.
NBC: That same Gonerfest weekend I also saw you play a daytime show with Useless Eaters at a BBQ. Jay Reatard played guitar with you guys at that show and for a while he was pretty involved with the band’s carreer. What exactly was Jay’s role with the band? How did you meet him and how did he get involved with Useless Eaters? How hard was it for you to cope with his death, on a personal level? What do you miss most about him?
Seth: Jay was the first person to show interest in my music. He contacted me about having heard my first cassette tape and we eventually became very close. He was like a big brother to me. I miss mostly having him around.
NBC: On a similar note, what are your touring plans for the remainder of the year? We heard a rumor you boys might be visiting Puerto Rico within the coming months? Care to confirm or deny?
Seth: We are about to go on a month long tour of the east coast and southern US. This will include a stop in San Juan and we are very excited.
NBC: We currently have a very active and vibrant independent music scene in Puerto Rico. Are you familiar with any of our local acts? If so, which are your favorites?
Seth: Puerto Rico has some amazing bands. Obviously Davila 666, but my new favorites are Ardillas and Los Vigilantes.
NBC: What music have you been listening to in recent months? Anything we might have missed that you’d like to turn us and our readers onto? Which currently active bands are your favorites?
Seth: I don't listen to a lot of current music. I've been really into Spaceghostpurrp, who is a rapper from Miami.
NBC: Can you please share with us the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you on the road while on tour? Please specify the city and year in which this incident occurred.
Seth: There's too many to name...
NBC: Who is the most famous person you have ever met that turned out to be a huge asshole? Please explain.
Seth: Haven't met many celebrities, but I went to a Christmas party at Ke$ha's house and she was really nice.
NBC: What city in any part of the world that you have toured through has the best, most decadent nightlife? Any titty bars you wanna recommend?
Seth: I've only been to a titty bar once in Memphis and it was terrible! I usually have a good time wherever I go so its hard to say which city has the best nightlife. Every city is different in its own ways.
NBC: Have any major or larger labels shown interest in your band? Any labels you would like to work with? Any you wouldn’t?
Seth: I've had a couple of bigger labels interested but were toally shit. I've always wanted to do a record with In The Red.
NBC: If someone offered you $50,000 to play a set of covers by one specific band, kind of a musical disguise kinda thing, what band would you choose and why? Keep in mind, you’d have to dress like the band during your set and the 24 hours following the show….
Seth: SLADE, because they ruled and had great costumes.
NBC: Name the 5 greatest songs ever written. 1, 2, 3 Go……
Seth: 1 - Clash - Lost In The Supermarket
2 - Wire - The 15th
3 - Fall - Wings
4 - Gun Club - Sex Beat
5 - Pink Fairies - Teenage Rebel
NBC: Who would win a fight between Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age and and a reaaaally coked out Courtney Love? Why?
Seth: Courtney. She seems pretty vicious.
NBC: Thank you for your time Seth! We very much appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. Now you can tell our readers, your friends and fans anything you want. Anything at all…..
Seth: WORLD PEACE
